Bears, moose and mountain goats: wildlife watching near Glacier
Where to see Glacier's big animals, and how to stay safe in grizzly country.
By Field Guide · October 18, 2026 · 1 min read

Glacier is one of the few places in the lower 48 where grizzly bears, black bears, moose, mountain goats and bighorn sheep all share the same mountains.
Where to look
- Mountain goats: Logan Pass and the Hidden Lake Overlook trail.
- Moose: along Upper McDonald Creek, the closest good moose country to the cabins, and at Kootenai Lakes near Goat Haunt.
- Bears: anywhere. Many Glacier and the open slopes along Going-to-the-Sun Road are common spots.
Binoculars do more for wildlife watching than anything else you can pack. The best light, and the most activity, is early morning and evening.
